Apex Legends, a no-cost battle royale-themed superhero shooter game created by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts. It was released on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 as well as Xbox One in February 2019 as well as with Nintendo Switch in March 2021 and to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in March 2022.
The game’s mobile counterpart that was designed for touchscreens, titled Apex Legends Mobile was released in May 2022, on Android along with iOS. It supports cross-platform play but not the mentioned mobile platforms.
In the lead-up to the game players divide into three or two-player teams, and choose from a set of characters that have distinct abilities, referred to in the game as “Legends”. The game comes with two modes of play. “Battle Royale” is the second mode “Battle Royale” the game, up to 20 teams of three or 30 two-person duos are able to land on an island, and search for weapons and other supplies prior to trying to take on any other player in the battle.
The area of play on the island decreases as time passes, requiring players to continue moving or otherwise be out of the play area, which could be fatal.
The last team to make it through is the winner of the round. In “Arenas” players break up three-player teams and compete against another team in a team-based 3v3 deathmatch that lasts for a set of games to decide who is the winner of the game.
Teams are successful when they have at minimum 3 points and is two points ahead.
Apex Legends takes place within the same science fiction world as the Respawn Entertainment Titanfall series, and features several character of Titanfall appearing in the game. Titanfall series appearing on the minor character level or as as playable Legends. The game’s development started at the end of 2016, however the project was secret until the time of its release.
The game’s launch in 2019 was a shock at the time, since it was thought it was the case that Respawn Entertainment was working on another installment in the Titanfall franchise, which was the studio’s first major game.
Apex Legends received generally positive reviews from critics who were awed by its gameplay, the progression system, and the fusion of elements from different genres. Some thought it was a great rival against other battle royale games.
Apex Legends had surpassed 25 million players at close of the debut week and then 50 million by the end of the first month. In April 2021, the game had more than 100 million players making it among the most played video games ever in terms of player count.
